It wasn’t hard to find a pedigree standout in the opening event at Doomben on Saturday for two year-olds and despite a wide gate, exciting colt Nikitas ran right up to his impressive bloodlines to win as he pleased.

Prepared by Kelso Wood and ridden by Michael Cahill, Nikitas led from barrier to box to win the 1200 metre juvenile dash by nearly five lengths in a thoroughly dominant display.

A win like this usually books the victor a ticket straight into the $2million Magic Millions 2YO Classic in January for which Nikitas will now be one of the leading contenders.

Kelso Wood certainly knows a thing or two about his sire Snitzel having prepared his former brilliant son Sizzling to finish fourth in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic before capturing the Group I BRC TJ Smith Stakes.

A $280,000 Magic Millions purchase for renowned bloodstock agent John Foote from the draft of Segenhoe Stud, Nikitas was bred by Black Caviar’s breeder Gilgai Farm.

Nikitas is a half-brother to Group I VRC Oaks winner Jameka and is the third foal of minor winning General Nediym mare Mine Game, a half-sister to Group I winner Jymcarew.

Mine Game has no yearling for the 2016 sales but has foaled this spring producing a filly by Cox Plate winner Shamus Award.
